Bath Lifts
Bath lifts lower you into the tub and raise you back up, aimed at people who want to soak but cannot safely step in or stand from the tub floor. This guide covers when a lift may fit, what to compare, and when a transfer bench or remodel is a better next step.
Start here
A bath lift is a powered or manual seat that travels in the tub, it is not the same as a transfer bench (slide across the rim) or a walk-in tub remodel. Match tub shape, drain location, and weight limit before you order.
For many homes, a transfer bench or shower chair solves bathing without installing lift hardware. See Bathroom Safety & Accessibility for the full topic map.
When a bath lift is worth a look
Consider a bath lift when:
- You want to use an existing bathtub but cannot lower yourself to the tub floor or stand back up.
- Stepping over the tub wall is possible with help, but sitting on the tub bottom is not.
- A clinician has mentioned a lift as part of a bathing plan, not as a substitute for their assessment.
Lifts need a compatible tub, working batteries or manual backup, and a plan for who will help if the mechanism fails.
What to compare first
Powered vs manual: Battery lifts need charging routines; manual backups matter when power fails.
Tub fit: Tapered tubs, whirlpool jets, or center drains can block lift bases, measure before you buy.
Alternatives: Transfer benches help when crossing the rim is the hard part but you can bathe seated above the floor. Walk-in showers or tub swaps are a bigger project but remove the lift entirely.
Fit and safety checklist
Before you buy or rely on equipment daily, check each row. Stop and reassess if anything fails.
| Done | Item | Check this | Watch for | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Tub compatibility |
Lift base fits flat tub floor and does not block drain. |
Base rocks or hits jets. |
Re-measure tub interior; confirm with seller. |
|
|
Weight limit |
Rated limit covers user plus any helper. |
Limit below real use. |
Choose higher-rated model. |
|
|
Power & backup |
Battery charge routine is realistic; manual backup understood. |
Dead battery mid-bath. |
Set charging schedule; know manual release. |

|
Support person |
Someone can assist if lift stalls or user feels unwell. |
