Stove Safety Devices
Stove safety devices can limit accidental burner use when knob turns, forgotten heat, or curious hands are the worry. This guide covers knob covers, guards, and shut-off helpers as planning tools. It does not replace smoke alarms or professional appliance repair.
Start at the stove controls
Stand at the range and note knob shape, whether the stove is gas or electric, and who still needs to cook independently. Match a device category to that pattern before you buy a full kit.
For day-to-day heat habits such as handle direction and steam, see burn prevention in the kitchen. For smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, see home safety detectors under Monitoring & Emergency Preparedness.
When stove safety devices may help
Devices may help when someone turns burners on by mistake, when a person forgets to shut off heat, or when visiting children can reach the front of the range. They help less when the real problem is balance, reach, or mitt grip alone. In those cases, start with habit changes and other kitchen guides.
Talk with a clinician or occupational therapist when memory, judgment, or medication changes are moving quickly. These tools support safer setup. They do not diagnose conditions or guarantee an outcome.
What to compare first
Stove type: gas knobs, electric dials, or smooth-top touch controls need different fits.
Device type: knob covers, stove guards, or automatic shut-off helpers solve different worries.
Override plan: a trusted cook still needs a safe way to use the range when devices are on.
Alarm coverage: smoke and CO alarms stay separate from stove controls. Plan both.
