What Is a Transfer Bench? — Home Care Compass hero illustration: warm, plain bathroom home-safety scene for older adults; no text in the image.

A transfer bench is a long seat that spans the tub wall so you can sit outside the tub, slide over the rim, and lower yourself without a high step. It is different from a shower chair, which assumes you can already enter the wet area.

Alternate terms

You may also see “tub transfer bench,” “bath transfer bench,” or “sliding bench.” They refer to the same general product type unless the listing describes a fixed seat.

When families consider one

The pattern is “the rim is the problem.” Standing endurance inside the shower may be fine once you are over the wall, or still hard, which means you may combine a bench with grab bars or seating later.
